London Bound: An Interview with Dallan Flint, Artistic Director

Dallan Flint, the Artistic Director here at Taylor Andrews had a once in a lifetime chance to travel to London with 16 students and a handful of staff members. Dallan entered a competition for the Visionary Award, a fundraiser hair show that benefits Leukemia research. The competitors came from all over the world from Ireland to the U.S. To be a part of the competition, hairstylists had to submit a photo for judging. The photo of Dallan’s hair creation was chosen from Taylor Andrews to go to the live competition in London. Here is what Dallan had to say about this amazing experience.

Tell us about the competition! What happened? Did you place?
Well, in the competition there are three categories: avant-garde, men’s hair, and color. I entered avant-garde. The competition started and I got to work with a makeup artist and model. We were being judged by some high-class hair artists! My wife was my makeup artist. We worked on our models on stage, they walked the runway, then we got to walk the runway with them. After the judges deliberated, they announced the winner on stage.

There were 100 finalists. In the end, only 7 of the 100 were from the United States. I was the only one who placed in the U.S., and I placed 3rd in avant-garde! It was a truly amazing experience.

You can see Dallan’s work on the Alternative Hair Show website.

That sounds like an experience you will never forget. What else did you do when you visited London?
Well, the day before the show, we got to tour with Anthony Mascolo (Creative Director of TIGI) and Robert Lobetta (internationally recognized hairdressing icon) in what was essentially a hair art museum. They had all sorts of their work displayed. It was amazing. All of us got to go, including the students.

What would you say was your favorite part of the whole experience, competition and all?
My favorite part, by far, was seeing the students experience this. You could see their minds open to all the possibilities that this career has. I got to see them see the culture. I am talented, but I have things happening for me because I am a person who is dedicated to doing my best and being nice. You can’t imagine all the things that happen when you are a good person. You don’t have to live in New York or California to have an opportunity like this. I am from Salt Lake!

What advice would you give current students or people who are thinking about going into this field and want to get to where you are?
Never give up. Ever. Never be afraid of failure. You never know what can come out of a failure. When you’re looking for a school, find a place that you can call home. Because that is what Taylor Andrews is. At Taylor Andrews, I believe you can do anything you want. There are no limitations.
