Do you love helping people look and feel their best? If you have a passion for transforming hair and boosting confidence, a career as a hair designer could be perfect for you. From creating the perfect cut to nailing a stunning color transformation, hair designers make a lasting impact on their clients’ lives. Picture yourself crafting a beautiful bridal updo or delivering a flawless blowout—at Taylor Andrews Academy of Hair Design, we’re here to turn that dream into reality.
How Do You Become a Hair Designer in Utah?
Here are the steps to get started on your career path:
Step 1: Enroll in a Reputable Hair Designer Program
To become a licensed hair designer in Utah, you’ll need the skills, techniques, and training to succeed—and that all starts with the right education. At Taylor Andrews Academy, we offer a dynamic hair designer program that prepares you for the real world.
We offer classes at three beautiful campuses in Provo, West Jordan, and St. George, making it convenient to begin your education wherever you are. Our student salon and clinic gives you hands-on experience working with real clients under the guidance of experienced instructors. This is your opportunity to build confidence, sharpen your skills, and develop the techniques that set you apart as a hair designer.
We know choosing a beauty school is a big decision. That’s why we invite you to schedule a tour of our campus! Come meet our instructors, talk to current students, and experience what it’s like to be part of the Taylor Andrews Academy family. While you’re here, you can even meet with our financial aid team to explore funding options and see how affordable your dream career can be.
Step 2: Complete Your Training Hours
The Utah Department of Professional Licensing (DOPL) requires hair designer students to complete 1,200 hours of training in an accredited program. At Taylor Andrews Academy, your education will include a balance of classroom instruction and hands-on practice.
- In the Classroom: You’ll learn essential theory, including hair care science, cutting techniques, coloring, safety protocols, and client communication. This knowledge is key for passing your exams and excelling in your career.
- In the Student Clinic: You’ll work directly with clients, providing haircuts, blowouts, colors, and more—all while receiving feedback from skilled instructors. This real-world experience is invaluable for building both your skills and your confidence.
While you’re here, you’ll also form a supportive network of classmates, instructors, and future colleagues. Many of our students develop lifelong friendships, study groups, and professional connections that support their careers long after graduation.
Step 3: Pass the Hair Designer Practical Exam
After completing your program, you’ll be ready to take the National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC) practical exam. This exam is your chance to showcase your skills in:
- Haircutting and styling
- Hair coloring
- Other essential hair services
The hands-on training you receive at Taylor Andrews Academy can give you the confidence to excel during this timed, real-world exam. By practicing in our student clinic under instructor supervision, you’ll be well-prepared to meet the exam’s challenges.
Step 4: Pass the Hair Designer Theory Exam
In addition to the practical exam, you’ll need to pass the NIC theory test. This written exam covers the concepts and knowledge you learned in the classroom. You’ll also need to complete the Utah State Hair Safety Course and pass its corresponding exam with a score of at least 75%.
At Taylor Andrews Academy, we help you prepare for these exams with study materials, practice tests, and support from instructors who know what it takes to succeed. Many students find it helpful to form study groups with classmates—a great way to reinforce your knowledge and build camaraderie.
Step 5: Apply for Your Utah Hair Designer License
Once you’ve passed your exams, it’s time to apply for your official Utah hair designer license through the DOPL. You can apply online, by mail, or in person for a fee of $60. Your license will need to be renewed every two years by September 30th, with a renewal fee of $52.
While Utah doesn’t require continuing education for license renewal, we encourage our graduates to keep learning! Staying on top of trends, techniques, and new products will help you grow as a stylist and stand out in this competitive industry.
Find Your Dream Job in Hair Design
With your license in hand, the opportunities are endless. Whether you dream of working in a high-end salon, styling hair for brides and special events, or even launching your own salon, Taylor Andrews Academy can prepare you to take the next step. Some career paths include:
- Working in luxury or budget-friendly hair salons
