How To Become an Esthetician in Utah

Are you passionate about skincare, beauty, and helping others look and feel their best? If so, a career as an esthetician might be your perfect fit! As an esthetician, you’ll dive deep into the world of skin health, mastering techniques from facials and exfoliation to advanced treatments like chemical peels and microdermabrasion. But where do you start on this journey? In this guide, we’ll walk you through every step of the process, so you can confidently embark on your new career in the ever-growing beauty industry.

Step #1: Enroll in a Certified Program

To become a licensed esthetician in Utah, you have to complete your education in a certified program. Taylor Andrews offers an advanced program that can help you pass your esthetician exam and get a relevant license.

Master Medical Esthetics Program

The Master Medical Esthetics Program is a comprehensive course for those who want to work in advanced skincare and medical esthetics. This program goes beyond the basics of esthetics. It provides in-depth training in areas such as:

  • Laser treatments
  • Chemical peels
  • Botox & Dermal Fillers
  • Microdermabrasion
  • And much more

During your education, you will work closely with instructors who have extensive experience in the medical esthetics field.

One of the key benefits of this program is its flexibility. Taylor Andrews Academy offers both day school and night school options, allowing you to choose a schedule that fits your lifestyle. High school seniors from participating school districts have the unique opportunity to enroll in the program as well.

After finishing this program and getting a license, you will have a chance to work in a medical setting, such as a dermatologist’s office, medical spa, or plastic surgery clinic. The advanced training provided in this program prepares you for a career that involves more complex and higher-paying procedures.

Step #2: Pass Relevant Exams

Once you finish your education, you have to pass the relevant exams. In Utah, they are arranged by the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC). The examination process is divided into two parts: written and practical.

Written Exam

The written exam evaluates your understanding of the theoretical aspects of esthetics. It covers a broad range of topics, including:

  • Skin anatomy
  • Skincare techniques
  • Sanitation and safety procedures
  • State regulations

The breakdown of the questions is as follows:

  • Scientific Concepts (55% of the exam): This section covers infection control, histology, physiology, skin disorders and diseases, hair and scalp care, and chemistry related to skin care products.
  • Esthetics Services (45% of the exam): This section focuses on skin analysis, client consultation, facial treatments, hair removal, and makeup application.

The exam consists of multiple-choice questions designed to test your knowledge of the essential concepts taught during your training.

You can pass the written esthetician exams in 19 locations across the state. There is also a possibility to take the exam at home. The exam lasts 90 minutes. The passing score is 75%.

Practical Exam

The practical exam assesses your ability to perform esthetic procedures in a hands-on setting. While you won’t be working on a live model, you’ll be provided with a mannequin head.

During this exam, you’ll demonstrate a range of skills, such as:

  • Facial treatments
  • Hair removal techniques
  • Makeup application
  • Massaging

The examinators will evaluate your technique, efficiency, and ability to meet to safety standards.

This part of the exam requires not only technical skill but also the ability to remain calm and focused under pressure.  At Taylor Andrews, we know that practice is key to success in the practical exam. That’s why we offer extensive hands-on training to make sure our students have everything they need to pass the exam smoothly.

There are only four locations where you can take a practical esthetician exam in Utah. Make sure to plan the time in advance.

Step #3: Apply for an Esthetician License

Once you pass the exam you can apply for the esthetician license. This is usually the easiest part of the process since you can do it online. If you’d like, you can also fill out the form and submit it in person. The application fee is $60. You have to renew the license every two years.

Keep in mind that you only have a year after passing the exams to apply for the license. Once the year is up, you may need to retake the exams.

Step #4:  Start Your Journey

Once you have your license, you can start your career as a professional esthetician. Depending on your preferences, you can seek several roles, including:

  • Skincare Specialist: Work in salons or dermatology clinics, offering skin treatments and consultations.
  • Medical Esthetician: Partner with medical professionals in clinics or medical spas to perform advanced skincare procedures.
  • Makeup Artist: Specialize in makeup application for events, photography, or film (working freelance or with beauty companies).
  • Beauty Consultant: Represent skincare and beauty brands and advise clients on the best treatments.
  • Spa or Salon Owner: Launch and manage your own beauty business.

Progressing up the career ladder in the health and beauty industry requires a responsible approach to continuous learning. Since new techniques and technologies appear daily, you have to follow the trends and master new skills. The highest-paid estheticians never stop learning.
