Protect Your Skin in the Summertime

So summer is coming up, and you’re ready to start spending all your time outdoors.  Maybe you’re even thinking of heading to the beach for a few weeks.  However, you know that there’s a big difference between a healthy tan and a bad sunburn, and you’re worried what all that sun might do to your skin.

Sunlight is good for the body, and can help rejuvenate you and give you energy.  The key is to find the right balance between getting too little sun and too much.  Here are some tips for achieving that balance:

  • Wear sunscreen, and lip balm.  Put it on every two hours.  It’s a hassle, but it can save you a world of stress.  Not only will it save you the pain of a burn and keep your skin looking healthy and fresh, it also helps prevent truly terrible things like skin cancer.   If you have fair skin, use a higher SPF, and if you’re going to be in the water make sure that the sunscreen is water resistant.
  • Use moisturizers.  Moisturizers will keep your skin from drying out, and helps keep your skin looking and feeling smooth and clean.  There are a variety of skin moisturizers on the market.  Find the one that is right for you, and get into the habit of applying it on a regular basis (each night before you go to bad, for example.)
  • Avoid the midday sun.  The sun is brightest and hottest during the midday hours (between about 10:00 and 2:00), so stay inside during those times if you can.
  • Cover yourself as much as possible.  You want to show off your body, but you also don’t want sun-damaged skin.  Wear just your swimsuit when sunbathing, and then put on a t-shirt and shorts for your other activities.  If you’re going to be participating in more strenuous activities like hiking, consider sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat.

Protecting your skin doesn’t have to be stressful, nor does it mean that you have to spend any less time outdoors during the summer month.  Just taking a few special precautions can keep your skin healthy and fresh throughout the year.
